Cob is a mixture of clayey soil, straw and water which are evenly mixed.
Cob is traditionally made in situ, however it can be preformed into cob blocks / bricks for additional ease of handling. Cornwall has a regional advantage in the presence of suitable soil due to the presence of clay from the decomposition of the granite outcrops. Historically the soil used in cob creation was extracted from the ground where the building was to be erected. More modern methods use pre-batched cob which gives greater consistency to the build whether new build or reconstruction. Several methods are available to repair or rebuild a cob wall including cob blocks, wet cob or rammed earth. Cob can be used on its own or in conjunction with stone. Cob blocks are bound with lime mortars
